These are course notes made during How to Flirt and Convert on Facebook by Kylie Bartlett. They should not be read as an endorsement of any of the strategies or products contained within the notes. Some I agree with, others I don’t. I’ll leave it to you to navigate the ethics.

What are the fears. Sell to the pain. It’s often easier than selling to the pleasure.

Rather than recreating a tribe or herd go to the existing tribes.

It’s like dating. Think about who you’d like to date and go to those places.

Important to add a note to your friend request. She writes:

Dear xxx, I noticed that we have many things in common (go to their profile and find something) and we also share many mutual friends. I’d be delighted if you’d accept my friend request. I look forward to connecting with you in the future. Best regards, Kylie.

Make no mention about what you do for business. People want to get to know the person before doing business.

Facebook are cracking down on people doing business on personal profiles. Take care.

Bartlett believes that personal pages work much better than Pages. If you’re going to use a personal profile for business it’s important to avoid spam behaviour.

Update profile with Likes, Interest, Contact Details, web address and other details. Target Likes and  Interests to match those of your ideal customer. Set privacy setting so that contact details can be found by everyone.

Way to get people to recognise you as an expert is to contribute. Discover who else is servicing your customers and contribute something constructive.

Negative feedback is going to happen. Whether you have a Facebook Page or not people will talk about your product or service. It’s best if this happens on your Page so you can turn the situation around. It works to be vulnerable.

Always credit a source. It’s polite.

Respond to people’s comments. Acknowledge what others say. Ignoring people is arrogant.

Be real and authentic. Pull back the curtain and let people in. At the same time share something that makes sense from a business perspective.

Status updates act as a kind of advertisement that sits at the top of the profile.

Use photos where possible and chose the name of your album strategically.

Get creative with events. Use Events creatively, not just for an physical event. Use the @ symbol to link to your own and other people’s events and Pages.

Only accept friend requests from people that match your target demographic. Try sending out a message to people who send a friend request without a note.

Thanks for inviting me to be your Facebook friend. Can I be so bold. Try popping a personal note with your friend request. People will remember this and will be more inclined communicate with you in the future.

Create products and services. What are you going to sell? Consider using Marketplace on Facebook. It’s free to list.

Position yourself through branding, look and logo. Repetition equals reputation. People want to see consistency.

Invest in a professional photo shoot. Consider carrying the colours in your photo onto your logo. Be careful about changing your profile pic. Ask your Facebook friends which pic they prefer then stick with it.

Secure your personal name as a domain name. Get all the versions (.com, .net etc.).

Create a tagline and elevator pitch. Put these wherever you can.

Create a welcome video. Add it to your Facebook Page welcome tab. Set up an opt-in on the Facebook page. The money is in the list.

Welcome video should be 2 – 2.5 minutes.

Start => problem that the audience is experiencing eg “are you tired of going to Internet marketing course…” (20 seconds) => introduce self “Hi, welcome, I’m…. I’m [who you are and why you] (20 seconds) => agitate the problem further (15 seconds) => solution with the benefit, the drill and the hole. Ask, so what?, why you?  (20 seconds) => The “offer” – give away your best nuggets, your prized possession, best nugget. Best version of an offer is an e-book but you could also use a free consultation. Give the offer a name e.g. 7 Must Know Secrets, 10 Things etc. (15 seconds) => The guarantee, “call the ghost” => Create scarcity and a call to action. Mean what you say about any limited time offers. Best buttons have the wording of the call to action on the button itself.

The formula for producing an ebook.

  • Choose a specific niche.
  • Choose a dramatic title that addresses that niche.
  • Get an ebook cover at Box Shot 3D. Can also use Publisher.
  • Use 6 blank index cards. On each card ask a question that your demographic would want to know.
  • Answer the questions, about one page per question.
  • Can produce it in PowerPoint as a cheap option.

Use PayPal rather than setting up a merchant facility with a bank. Try iSwipe Global for real world sales.

Download your shopping cart. Add the Payvment Facebook app to either your profile or Facebook Page. Update with the required details and product details. This store catalogue can be placed on a website. Tutorials are available. Payvment provides a way to give discounts to people who are a fan of the Page. Having privacy settings open allows people to buy without being a Facebook friend.

The key to growth is having other people promote your products and services.

Four tabs every Page should have:

  1. A Welcome tab. That’s where people should land when they visit your page.
  2. YouTube tab. Video is the biggest growth area.
  3. Shop Now tab. This is where you’ll sell stuff.
  4. Blog tab.

Keep everything on Facebook. Don’t bother starting a blog, use Notes instead.

Try pagemodo where you can build a customised Facebook page for free. They also have more customised tabs for a charge.

Targeted Facebook ads work well. Target the problem in the wording of the ad.

To build a fan page add people as friends and then suggest the page to your friends. Kylie offers to promote her clients Facebook pages to her friends. That’s why a large personal friend list is important. The more friends you have the more fans you can build on your page.

To clarify your audience demographics enter your competitor’s URL in quantcast. This will give you the demographics.
