Sore shins and a new 15 lap PB

Last week was dominated by soreness to my right shin. It’s not like the pain is killing me but it’s there and it’s annoying.

On Tuesday night Rita suggested I have the next morning off then do the ladder in the evening. I wondered how that would change anything and dismissed the idea. But I woke Wednesday morning with some discomfort and decided to give the ladder a miss. I then did 20 easy in the evening. With the 20 next morning I’d done 40 in less than 24 hours, but I’d also given my shin a break of nearly 36 hours. And suddenly I started to feel normal again.

Saturday went OK then, on Sunday, an Olympic rower turned up. Man he wound the pressure up! Mark (one of the Legend’s of the Ladder) went after him. At first they were on par with Mark’s superior downhill speed giving him a slight advantage, but then the big fella started to pull away. Mark had already done 20 laps when the tussle started and was feeling the pinch.

Just when it looked like Mark was going to crack he lifted a notch. A lap later they were back on level terms. Two laps later Mark was in front.

Meanwhile I was cracking out a fair pace of my own. They began gaining ground on me but I knew the pace was unsustainable. When I looked at my watch at the end of lap 14 it read 2:38. That’s a seriously quick lap. Someone had to blink.

I settled into stride and did enough to not let the big guy past. I wasn’t turning myself inside out but I wasn’t far away from max. On the next lap the Olympian called it a day and left. That left me with 5 laps to run and I thought I’ll keep going as was feeling ok. At the finish of 20 I’d set a PB for 15 laps of 42:03. Being that my first 2 laps took over 10 minutes I can see that cracking the hour for 20 will happen soon.

From now on I’m going to start my watch at the end of the third lap. That way I’ll be able to check my time at the end of lap 17. If the time is less than 52 minutes I’ll crank out an extra 3 for a lash at the 20 laps in an hour. If it’s less than 51 I can pretty much cruise through for an easy win.

A New Personal Best on Jacob’s Ladder

The bench seats at the top of Jacob's LadderPleased to report I set a new PB for 15 laps of Jacob’s on Friday. I started out with 5 very slow laps having no intention to go hard. My mate Mark was having a bit of a dip so I kind of just joined in. Pretty soon I’d rounded the 10 lap mark feeling pretty good and kept going, finishing off with a time of 43:11.72.

The next step is to complete 20 in under an hour. That will happen one day when I least expect it.

Last week on Jacob’s Ladder

Agave flower buds on Jacob's LadderJacob’s Ladder was again my playground last week. I managed 150 laps and a new PB for 15. There was a break in the hot weather on Friday and that brought a welcome cool change. It’s so much nicer to be working hard when it’s not hot.

Breaking things up was the start of my new photo of the week series. Yesterday I took the time to grab some pre-dawn photos of Jacob’s shadows. In the coming weeks I’m hoping to capture some of the characters of Jacob’s Ladder in a series I’m calling Legends of The Ladder. I hope to include people like Mark Bailey, Greg Williams, Tony Beard, Gavin, Adrienne and Toni, and a number of others who are on the ladder almost every day. I’ll include a photo and a small story about what makes them so unique. Perhaps it’s their style, what they wear or some of their previous Jacob’s Ladder exploits. Jacob’s Ladder: 10 laps sub-30 minutes

I ripped out 10 laps of The Ladder in 28:48:48 today.

This was done after I’d done 10 laps to warm up. I had the engine well and truly at operating temperature.

There was only light traffic and I was able to maintain my downhill speed. I set up a fast lap with a fast desecent. Under 60 seconds is good and 56 seconds is my best.

It’s still very warm and that adds to the effort required to achieve a good time. I’m looking forward to the cooler months ahead.

Closing in on 1000

As of Sunday my tally for the year is 920 laps of Jacob’s. I’ll crack 1000 on Thursday if everything goes to plan.

On Wednesday I produced a personal best for 20 laps. I’m still pretty stoked with the effort. There are a few Ladder regulars expecting me to do 20 in under an hour. It’s doable but won’t be easy.

The weather has been hot with only the odd cool day. I expect my times will come down as the weather cools down.

One regular – Mark – is way crazier than me. When I do 20 he does 30. Then he goes back in the afternoon to do another 10. He’s nuts, in a good way. And he’s turning his laps into fartlek sessions running up the long flights then taking it easy on the shorts. I tried to run him down while he was on his last 5 today. He was too quick and it didn’t happen.

Leaning Into The Pain

There’s a point on Jacob’s Ladder where the pain in my legs feels sharp and red and hot. It always happens on the first lap, before I’ve broken a sweat and way before I’m up to full speed. It happens again on lap 6 and sometimes on 16.

It’s a pain that asks why and raises doubts. Why are you doing this? Are you sure you’re not going to give yourself an injury? Have the day off. There’s always tomorrow. The pain and the doubts are like a bickering husband and wife, one needling, the other nagging.

When I’m going hard the needling and nagging stop. Gone is the anxiety and the doubt. All that’s left are the steps and the heavy, rhythmic breathing; and the pain. It’s still there but it no longer hurts. It’s not frightening or scary and it’s there with no doubt.

It simply exists. As I lean into the pain the fear goes away. In its place is an intimacy, where the sweating and the breathing and the burning become one.

It’s at that point I feel invincible and courageous, as if nothing and no-one could defeat me.

Perhaps it’s passing through the wall that runners experience. Perhaps it’s endorphins and chemicals.

But for me it’s something more, like when resistance dissolves and two people lean in for their first kiss. When the mind and the voices stop, when the body and the moment and the experience is all that there is.

And it all happens when I lean into the pain.
